Residential Direct Solar Hot Water System

How Thermosiphon Water Heaters Work

Your FreeFlow Solar Water Heating system is known as a “passive” solar water heater because it does not require mechanical pumps, controllers, or any moving parts to make hot water. Thermosiphon solar systems work on the principle of natural convection, or the fact that heated liquids rise.

The FreeFlow storage tank can be equipped with an optional electrical heating element that can provide hot water during periods of inclement weather or high use. In two-tank systems, the supplemental electric or gas water heater will provide backup water heating if necessary.

What is a Thermosiphon System?

A Thermosiphon system is a system where the heated water in the solar collectors rises up into the storage tank by natural Thermosiphon action. Thermosiphon action occurs when water that is heated in the collectors expands becoming lighter allowing colder heavier water to fall by gravitational force to the bottom of the collector. The cold water falling to the bottom of the collector pushes the hotter lighter water back up into the storage tank. This natural action commonly known as Thermosiphon action occurs without any moving parts or auxiliary electrical energy input
to the system.
