Secretary Chu - Secretary Chu tours the leading US manufacturer of solar thermal equipment Alternate Energy Technologies (AET)
Jacksonville, FL – On Friday April 2nd the U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu visited Alternate Energy Technologies (AET) to explore how the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) has impacted the Solar Thermal Industry. Secretary Chu toured the facility, visited with AET’s management and addressed an assembled group of employees, business leaders and local and state government officials.
“The Country that leads the clean energy economy will be the Country that leads the global economy,” said secretary Chu, demonstrating the lead role that renewable energy companies like AET will play if the U.S. is to maintain and grow its position within this new economic driver.
As the most established U.S. manufacturer of Solar Thermal Flat Plate Collectors, AET has witnessed not only the effects of the current policy incentives provided by ARRA and TARP, but also the incentives of the 1980’s and the devastation that their premature revocation created within the renewable energy industry. This unique perspective provided Secretary Chu with the opportunity to utilize AET as a litmus test for the effectiveness of the ARRA as compared to previous federal incentives and the interim periods without federal incentives. Additionally Secretary Chu was able to draw upon the industry expertise and experience of AET’s managing partner, Billy Byrom, who has committed his life to the Solar Thermal Industry and participated in its evolution over the last 30 years.
Through conversations with Mr. Byrom, Secretary Chu learned that since the passage of ARRA, AET has experienced a growth of almost 32 % from 698,518 sq.ft. of collector area in 2006, prior to ARRA, to a peak of 1,027,000 sq.ft in 2009. AET has also seen an increase in solar thermal dealers and distributors during the same period from a low of 35 in 1999 to over 400 in 2008. This increase in demand and distribution has allowed AET to grow its work force by 300% and, if current projects hold, AET anticipates doubling its manufacturing staff within 3 years. Additionally, AET estimates that for every solar system it sells 32 man hours of labor are created for local economies.

“Solar Thermal Market Trending Up”
During the ASES National Solar Conference in Phoneix Arizona, Stephen Lacey with Renewable Energy World.com takes the opportunity to speak with Alternative Energy Technologies' Karen Allain about trends in the solar hot water market and the prospects for the industry in the U.S.
Florida’s Department of Community Affairs has approved AET’s collectors under the Florida Building Code in October 2009 (FL 12981). Both the MSC and AE Series collectors are now on Florida’s master file and will no longer be required to substantiate their installs with engineering drawings.
